The Ten Archetypes

The Ten Gods (十神, shíshén) are the most important interpretive tool in Bazi. Despite the name, they are not deities — they are ten relational patterns, each describing how a given Heavenly Stem in your chart relates to your Day Master's element and polarity. Once you understand the Ten Gods, you can read the personality, career, and relationship dynamics of any chart.

What the Ten Gods Are

Every Heavenly Stem in your chart (other than your Day Master itself) carries one of the Ten Gods. The Ten God assigned to each stem is determined by two questions: (1) what element does it carry relative to your Day Master's element, and (2) does it share your Day Master's polarity (Yang/Yin), or is it the opposite?

The element relationship gives five families of meaning: the same element as your Day Master (peers), the element that generates your Day Master (resources/wisdom), the element you generate into (output/expression), the element that controls you (authority), and the element you control (wealth). Within each family, the same-polarity variant is called indirect (偏) and the opposite-polarity variant is called direct (正). Five families × two polarities = the Ten Gods.

The Ten Archetypes in Detail

The Equal (比肩) — Collaborator

The Equal is the same element as your Day Master, in the same polarity. It represents peers, partners, and equals — the people who are like you. A chart strong in The Equal suggests someone who thrives in partnerships, values independence, and has a natural gift for collaboration. The pattern shows up most clearly in career and self-expression: you work best alongside people who share your wavelength, and you resist hierarchies that put you above or below others.

The Challenger (劫财) — Competitor

The Challenger is the same element as your Day Master, opposite polarity. It represents competition — the rival who pushes you, the sibling who contests resources. A chart strong in The Challenger describes a fierce competitor who turns obstacles into fuel. The pattern shows up in money and ambition: you're wired to compete, but the same energy can become a rivalry that drains resources if not channeled into a productive arena.

The Creative Mind (食神) — Creator

The Creative Mind is the element your Day Master generates into, same polarity. It represents your output — the ideas, art, and expression you produce from your core energy. A chart strong in The Creative Mind suggests analytical creativity as your greatest asset. The pattern shows up in self-expression and career: you're wired to create, and your best work emerges when you have outlets for that restless generative energy.

The Rebel Visionary (伤官) — Innovator

The Rebel Visionary is the element your Day Master generates into, opposite polarity. It represents unconventional thinking — the part of you that questions rules and sees what others miss. A chart strong in The Rebel Visionary describes a true innovator whose gift for challenging convention is just that: a gift, not a flaw. The pattern shows up in career and authority dynamics: you'll chafe under rigid structures but thrive in environments that reward originality.

The Opportunity Magnet (偏财) — Magnet

The Opportunity Magnet is the element your Day Master controls, same polarity. It represents indirect wealth — money that comes through unexpected channels: investments, windfalls, networking, serendipity. A chart strong in The Opportunity Magnet suggests money finds you through non-linear paths. The pattern shows up in money: you may be less of a steady earner and more of an opportunist who lands the big deal when the moment is right.

The Wealth Builder (正财) — Builder

The Wealth Builder is the element your Day Master controls, opposite polarity. It represents direct wealth — money earned through steady, disciplined work. A chart strong in The Wealth Builder describes a path to financial security that is steady, reliable, and incremental. The pattern shows up in money and career: you build wealth the old-fashioned way, and the consistency others find boring is exactly your edge.

The Warrior Spirit (七杀) — Warrior

The Warrior Spirit is the element that controls your Day Master, same polarity. It represents pressure — the authority that pushes you, the crisis that demands leadership. A chart strong in The Warrior Spirit describes pressure that doesn't break you but sharpens you into a decisive leader. The pattern shows up in career and authority dynamics: you're at your best when stakes are high and others are panicking — just be careful not to manufacture crisis to feel alive.

The Authority (正官) — Leader

The Authority is the element that controls your Day Master, opposite polarity. It represents structured authority — the rules, hierarchies, and social order within which you operate. A chart strong in The Authority suggests you naturally command respect and thrive in structured environments. The pattern shows up in career: you're wired for leadership within established systems, and you tend to rise in organizations where decorum and reliability are valued.

The Intuitive Scholar (偏印) — Mystic

The Intuitive Scholar is the element that generates your Day Master, same polarity. It represents indirect knowledge — intuition, unconventional learning, and non-mainstream wisdom. A chart strong in The Intuitive Scholar suggests wisdom that comes from intuition and unconventional paths rather than formal education. The pattern shows up in self-expression and inner life: you perceive things others miss and tend to trust your gut over consensus.

The Nurturing Wisdom (正印) — Mentor

The Nurturing Wisdom is the element that generates your Day Master, opposite polarity. It represents direct resources — formal education, mentorship, and the protection of those who came before. A chart strong in The Nurturing Wisdom suggests knowledge and mentorship flow naturally to you. The pattern shows up in career and relationships: you absorb wisdom like a sponge, and your greatest growth comes through guides who recognize your potential.

Special Archetype Combinations

When two or more archetypes appear together in a chart, classical Bazi reads them as a combination pattern — a more specific reading than either archetype alone. Here are the seven classical combinations and what they mean when they show up in your chart.

• 食神生财 — "The Creative Mind generating Wealth." Your creativity (output) flows directly into money. A strong pattern for artists, entrepreneurs, and anyone whose income depends on producing original work.
• 伤官见官 — "The Rebel Visionary meeting Authority." A tension between unconventional vision and established power. Can either be the friction that makes you legendary or the conflict that holds you back — depends on how you manage the dynamic.
• 杀印相生 — "Warrior Spirit and Nurturing Wisdom in resonance." The pressure that sharpens you is transmuted into wisdom. Challenges become your greatest teachers. A pattern often seen in leaders who grew through adversity.
• 财官双美 — "Wealth and Authority in alignment." Career ambition and financial abundance fuel each other. The rare combination where the path to leadership is also the path to prosperity.
• 比劫争财 — "Equals and Challengers contesting Wealth." Watch for partnerships that drain resources — not every ally has your best interests at heart. A cautionary pattern about choosing collaborators carefully.
• 食伤泄秀 — "Output channels your brilliance." A restless mind that needs creative outlets. Channel that energy into art, writing, or entrepreneurship — or it turns inward as anxiety.
• 印绶护身 — "Resources protect you." Mentors, education, and family support form a natural protective shield. You weather storms that would break others because you have a deep well of backing to draw from.

Reading Your Own Archetypes

Your chart will not contain all ten archetypes — most charts show three to five prominently. The archetypes present in your chart describe your default patterns: how you tend to think about work, handle money, relate to authority, and express yourself. The archetypes absent from your chart describe energy types you'll need to consciously cultivate or find in partners.
